CBC Rehearsal Retreat
In June 2013, the Chestnut Brass had a rehearsal retreat in Greeley, Colorado to prepare for their upcoming August trip to South Korea. During the CBC's 5th visit to Jeju Korea, the CBC will participate in the International Wind Festival. A premiere of Music for Brass Quintet by Jong-Uek Woo will highlight their trip. The work by Mr. Woo, an internationally known Korean trumpet player, composer and conductor, displays unique traditional Korean emotion in the format of this brass quintet. An atonal work, it emphasises melodic and harmonic intervals of 4ths and 5ths with major and minor seconds. An exciting one movement work, it is both lyrical and rhythmically derivative of traditional Korean music.
New Trumpets
During the CBC rehearsal retreat, John and Bruce were able to try new trumpets being developed by Mr. William Pfund, Professor Emeritus at the University of Northern Colorado. Several Bb and C trumpets were given a trial spin as new arrangements and Music for Brass Quintet by Mr. Woo were refined for concert performances. These wonderful instruments possess an even sound quality throughout their registers, good intonation and were easy and fun to play! For more information visit: billpfund.com
New Arrangements
Jay Krush (tubist with CBC) provided several new arrangements for the reading sessions including John the Revelator, to add to his continuing adventures with American folk songs. John (Thomas) brought from his New York experiences- Somewhere Over the Rainbow in an adaptation of the wonderful arrangement of the classic tune by Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole.
The CBC had great fun in Colorado including a cookout with members of Boulder Brass, former CBC trombonist William Stanley and Jack Herrick (Marian's college horn teacher)and his wife Joann.
See us next in Jeju South Korea - August 6 through August 16.
