The January Horn of the Month is a Scherzer trumpet pitched in “D”. It is a silver instrument with a gold wash on the inside of the bell. The valves are top action rotary valves, sometimes referred to as a” tarv” trumpet (valves are in the standard configuration: whole step, half step, step and a half). The bell inscription, in four lines of text, reads: “Scherzer/ Augsburg/ Inh. H. Sandner/ Mod. Prof. A. Piechler”.
From 1930-1955 the Scherzer company was located in Augsburg, Germany and in 1954, Hermann Sandner took control of the company. The last line refers to Professor Arthur Piechler (1986-1974),a German composer and organist who taught at the Augsburg Leopold Mozart Conservatory and led the Oratoriumverein at the conservatory.
The Scherzer company made this model D trumpet with two optional bell flares, this being the smaller of the two choices. I purchased this instrument used in the late 1970’s in Philadelphia. It was in the shop of Vincent Dell’Osa & Son; the master brass repairman of Philadelphia for years. If I had gone to the store a week earlier there would also have been a Scherzer trumpet in high “F” too!
Scherzer is especially remembered for making the Bb piccolo trumpet that the great soloist Adolph Scherbaum used to perform the Bach 2nd Brandenburg Concerto (over 400 performances) and for re-introducing many Baroque trumpet works that had been lying in obscurity.
Many think of Maurice André and the piccolo trumpet as synonymous; but the following quote shows a wonderful perspective between two great artists, both of whom loved the trumpet.
Maurice André once replied during a TV-interview to the question as to who was the best trumpet player ranking right after himself:
"I am being followed by many, but I had a single predecessor, Adolf Scherbaum, to whom I owe it all - it was his playing that set the standard and shaped my style."
